Random Things Tours: Deadly Choice by S.Lee Manning

I am glad to be given the chance to return to authors whose books not only entertained me, but equally raised interesting, often moral, dilemmas. S.Lee Manning is one o them, and I am honored to be able to feature her on my blog for the third time, And what a return it is, because Deadly Choice is nothing as I ever read before.

Set in the US, it uses the ideas and framework of pro-life choices, setting them in a very tense thriller novel. An unexpected choice of a thriller topic, but if you think twice, it has a lot to share about how we perceive life and death, and how the choice between one and another is a terribly hard burden.

After a doctor failed to save her daughter, left to bleed following an abortion. Patricia Scott is set out for revenge. The doctor´s sudden death is categorized as suicide, but her wife knew him better and therefore, she requests the help of private investigator Lizzie Vaughn to figure out the truth. But the investigation shows more complicated as expected, as Lizzie and Patricia may meet in the most unexpected way, in the most unexpected place. Both of them faced with a very complex decision to take, that may save a life.

In addition to the unique take on a highly sensitive topic, Manning also created a very eventful story - avoiding thus the risks of becoming stereotypically preaching, or ideologically loaded. Everything is a story, using fragments of a reality that may create situations as described in the book.

The predominantly female characters are complex, in both their decisions and the genesis of their decisions.

As a reader, it is hard to make moral judgements or take a stance, and this is one of the beautiful challenges of Deadly Choice. I enjoyed both the writng and the takes on a very burning topic, particularly in the US.

Deadly Choice is a book whose ideas will stay with me for a very long time, and this is the company that usually I expect from good books.

Rating: 5 stars
