Random Things Tours: The Fix by M.A.Russo

Never underestimate a book with a slow start. As in life, there is no guarantee that something/someone/a life with a very chilled out beginning may end up in a boring way. This is particularly available for books. Crime thriller books, to be more specific.

Half an hour into The Fix written by the sister collective M.A.Russo I was far from being impressed. Too slow, I nodded more than once, and my mind was already wandering away, as it usually happens when I am really not into someone or something. But one or two pages later, my hyper activity made a turn in order to fix my brain to the book. 75% fixed. Then 80. Then fully, as not only the pace was speeding up, but the events and relationships between the characters become foggier and I could not figure out what was supposed to happen next. Will it be another rape? Another violent crime? Who is the criminal, which intervenes into the story through short yet poignant interferences - Terrifying interventions, samples of utter negativity and overwhelming hate? How one can protect against him? What triggers him?

For the faint of heart, The Fix is not an easy read. It shaken your mind and take away your peace of mind. It raises doubts - if one needed any more - about the human´s penchant towards evil. At the same time, it also enters the mind of a traumatic perception, which often leads to evil-oriented behavior.

From the literary point of view, the book builds up slowly, as I already mentioned, in order to give space to the narrative construction to enfold through the profiling of the characters and the dialogues. Actually, the dialogues play an important part in the story, as they mirror the various characters, and outline and determine the course of the story and its episodic installment.

A special mention to the cover which is as terrifying as the rest of the story. A simple image may have a very powerful impact on the perception of a story as well.

The Fix is an unusual journey into a very particular criminal mind and its darkness. It shocks and tears your peace into pieces, but it does make you think as well. Relieved, one may appreciate how books do open the doors into the human underground in an imaginative, creative way, but all is gone once you reached the end.
