10 strangers on an Indonesian island should convince that they are that couple that may take the big prize. But there is a storm in paradise and a hut was destroyed, taking the life of its inhabitant. What looks at first as an accident may be in fact a deadly game that we are instantly taken in to solve. Sounds like the An Then There Were None, the reality show-paradise island version.
One Perfect Couple, the latest book by Ruth Ware is a very fast-paced locked-room (island) mystery, with strong female characters and a captivating story. I´ve really read the book within one long weekend day and couldn´t have think about a better way to spend my day.
The main couple, Lyla Santiago - 32, a scientist secretely longing for a family - and Nico - 28, an actor that dreams to achieve his potential - are without a doubt, the most dynamic story´s duo. The characters are mostly likeable. Although the culprit is very much clear from the middle of the book, it remains to be known the reasons and ways of operation, thus the suspense which continue for a little while until the end.
The book also shed a cruel light into the world of reality shows, exposing the lack of empathy and cruelty, exchanged for an illusory fame.
For me, it was the third book by Ruth Ware but would definitely want to become more familiar with this reader. I really liked both the plot construction and the choice of characters. This book sounded very different compared to the other two I´ve read, but clearly I need more background to paint a bigger literary picture.
