Random Things Tours: Benji and the Gunpowder Plot by Kate Cunningham

Midgrade children are usually fascinated by timetravel adventures. They like the feeling of being accidentally took out of their comfort zones and adventurously following their characters in a world they cannot read because too far away in time.

On the occasion of Bonfire Night, Benji got lost in a time hole, being sent directly to the beginning of the 17th century. While trying to get back home, he is faced with different historical sensibilities typical for the people living at the time, but also with a new world. At least for a while, it seems that his appetite for adventure is finally satisfied.

Written for a middle grade audience - 9 to 12 years - Benji and the Gunpowder Plot by Kate Cunningham is supposed to be the first from the Time Tumblers series. The reading is entertaining, the action is fast paced - exactly what one may expect while reading a story to a 9yo. The wording is rich without being overcharged, with a structure of the sentece allowing the reader both to understand and to learn new words.

Although the details shared - Bonfire Night, Guy Fawker, London in 1605 - are specific for London, I don´t see any reasons though to limit this knowledge only to the London/British readers. Those outside the area can inform themselves and improve their knowledge about the facts mentioned.

Benji and the Gunpowder Plot is equally adventurous for the adult reader, and I can´t wait to read the next installment.
