I forgot to count how many books I´ve read lately where there is a romance starting on a cruise, but each romance is different and so are their writers. Jill Mansell´ latest, Just One Look at You is my latest add to the list of romantic reads, happening during a trip - this time, Venice - but with a very heartwarming and empathic touch that I loved so much when I´ve read and reviewed another book by her.
The book shares with smart humour and vivid dialogues, a moderately paced story about slowly going beyong grief and fear and embracing love and friendship.
Fen is accepting the invitation of her long-grieving grandmother Disa on a cruise to the enchanting Venice. Among the passengers, two charming bachelors, that may add a bit of spice to the story. But the love story doesn´t go necessarily straight forward as the ways of real love aren´t that easy to grasp at the first sight.
The lives of many characters are seamlessly intertwinned and Mansell adds to all those interactions so many emotional intricacies. The reader may not be always faced with a fake bed of roses, and some episodes are heartbreaking, but those nuances makes the story even more relatable.
Just One Look at You is a perfect weekend read, embarking on a purely human journey enfolding against the romantic Venetian backdrop.
