Random Things Tours: Aunt Maria´s Last Aria by Anna Nichols

Crime stories comes in different shapes, but especially from many places. There are at least as many crime settings as there are humans in the world, hence my curiosity to discover the world (also) through crime novels set all over the world.

Anna Nichols is considered ´the most prolific British author writing about Mallorca´ - as a PR consultant, among others, I find this positioning super smart. You have the place and the skills and a clear, niche brand. In addition to being a journalist and traveler, she also penned the Mallorca crime series. I haven´t read the previous books in the series, but Aunt Maria´s Last Aria caught me from the very beginning.

A famous opera singer is found death in an aparent suicide. Meanwhile, in the small Mallorcan village of Sant Marti, old people are mysteriously dying and a newly arrived real estate agent is warned that he may follow as well. All look like the perfect challenge for curious sleuth Isabel Flores Montserrat, her pet ferret and the police chef Tolo Cabot. A dream team of investigators, if you ask me, charming the reader through their humour, creativity and determination to fight against evil(s).

I liked very much the overall voice of the story, as well as the overall setting. I haven´t been to Mallorca yet, but now I may be inspired to visit soon, as it may have that drop of mystery only crime reader may be longing for.

Some characters may have an unique sense of humour, a praised quality one does not need to apologize for. A definitely a recommended read if you are looking for some smart sleuth summer weekend and eventually inspiration for a trip - or two - to Mallorca.
